The Right HDTV For You

Alright, you've decided to make the plunge and invest in an HDTV set. With so many models and technologies to choose from, how do you find the right HDTV equipment for you? Here are some tips to help you buy the best HDTV set for your situation:

  • Don't worry too much about the technology. For the average consumer, there's little difference between plasma and LCD these days. Both offer similar sets of features.
  • Go for the biggest size you can afford. You're going to want a larger TV set than you currently have, otherwise the image will seem smaller because of the increased horizontal resolution. You might as well go as large as you can to get maximum viewing enjoyment, since you're unlikely to buy a new HDTV set for a while after your first purchase.
  • Consider upgrading your audio system at a later date. You might be tempted to buy a new audio system with the new HDTV equipment, but hold off on that and spend the money on the HDTV set itself. What you have now is probably good enough, and you can always upgrade later with no problems.
  • Get an HD-capable personal video recorder (PVR). Once you start watching HDTV broadcasts, switching back to SDTV is a real disappointment. Chances are you have a VCR and you're used to taping programs on the VCR for later playback. Well, the VCR's not going to record HD-quality programming — it's going to record standard television! Spend some money instead on an HD-capable PVR, something that lets you record HD programming for later playback. You won't regret it!
